Laura Polinoro Workshop e LPWK
After ten years of working with the Alessi Study Centre I felt it was time for a re-launch… In that intense decade of projects, research and experiences, we had accomplished our revolution in the world of design. The elements of that change — the meta-project and the workshop — represented the strong points of a practice that had by then been internalized by the company. The meta-project work, i.e. the development of a product as a team project, the result of exchanges and influences between skills, criteria and knowledge from a variety of fields. And the workshop, namely the design seminars in which the meta-project work becomes operational.
Re-launch meant to continue that same way of understanding design, but independently from Alessi. It also meant to further expand the range of investigation, always exploring a variety of typological areas related to the domestic environment but also to the person.
Thus began the experience of “Laura Polinoro Workshop”, a series of research and design seminars that I developed in the early 2000s: “The Lightness of Steel”, “The Gift”, “The Immanent Object”, “Ba-Rock”. These are the names of some of the most significant workshops of that period. In 2004, under the brand “LPWK”, I synthesized that first name which was applied to the research I had undertaken independently. Since that day, it has accompanied every product conceived by the research and exploration that I’ve proposed, each time expressiing in different forms the interdisciplinary and transversal approach that has always characterized my work.
“The Alessi Study Centre (CSA) was opened in Milan in 1990. Laura Polinoro, who was responsible for its activities, brought with her the intuition and background of a semiologist who had studied under the tutelage of such important scholars as Umberto Eco and Paolo Fabbri. Under her influence, we introduced Alessi disciplines hitherto alien to the design world — such as anthropology and semiotics — and began a painstaking process to exit the qualms of rhetoric in which reveled some pompous Italian design. Since 1998, the CSA no longer exists as a physical place. Its identity has become a freer and more virtual space for research and contact with the world of young, international design. Laura is always its heart, but now as an independent designer.”

Dopo dieci anni di lavoro con il Centro Studi Alessi ho sentito che era tempo di rilanciare… In quell’intenso decennio di progetti, ricerche ed esperienze avevamo compiuto la nostra rivoluzione nel mondo del progetto. Gli elementi di quel cambiamento – il metaprogetto e il workshop – rappresentavano i punti saldi di una pratica ormai interiorizzata dall’azienda. Il lavoro metaprogettuale, ossia lo sviluppo di un prodotto come attività corale, frutto di scambi e contaminazioni fra saperi, competenze e criteri provenienti da ambiti diversi. E il workshop, ossia il seminario di progettazione nel quale il lavoro metaprogettuale diviene operativo.
Rilanciare significava continuare quel modo di intendere la progettazione, ma in modo autonomo rispetto ad Alessi. Significava anche ampliare ulteriormente lo spazio di indagine, esplorando ambiti tipologici sempre diversi, attinenti al domestico, ma anche alla persona.
Nacque così l’esperienza di “Laura Polinoro Workshop”, una serie di ricerche e seminari di progettazione che sviluppai nei primi anni 2000. “The lightness of steel”, “Il dono”, “L’oggetto immanente”, “Ba-Rock”, questi i nomi di alcuni dei workshop più significativi di quel periodo. Nel 2004, con la sigla “LPWK”, sintetizzai quel primo nome dato all’attività di ricerca che avevo intrapreso in modo autonomo. Da allora accompagna ogni prodotto che nasce dalle ricerche e dalle esplorazioni che propongo, declinando in forme ogni volta differenti quell’approccio interdisciplinare e trasversale che ha sempre caratterizzato il mio lavoro.
“Il Centro Studi Alessi (CSA) è stato aperto a Milano nel 1990, Laura Polinoro, che ne è stata la responsabile, ha portato in azienda l’intuizione e la formazione di semiologa acquisita alla scuola di Eco e di Fabbri. Con lei abbiamo introdotto in Alessi discipline fino ad allora estranee al mondo del progetto – come l’antropologia e la semiologia – e iniziato un faticoso processo per uscire dalle remore della retorica in cui si beava un certo paludato design italiano. Dal 1998 il CSA non esiste più come luogo fisico. La sua identità si è trasformata in uno spazio più libero e virtuale di ricerca e contatto con il mondo del giovane design internazionale. Laura ne è sempre il cuore, ma ora come autore indipendente.” Alberto Alessi
